Located in the 6th and 7th districts of Paris Saint-Germain-des-Prés is an iconic area on the left bank of the river where you can find book shops, art galeries and cafes. Saint-Germain-des-Prés spreads from the Seine down to the Luxembourg garden.
Saint-Germain-des-Prés was created in the 12th century and its population was about 600 people. From the 17th century intellectuals started to settle in this area. After the second World War Saint-Germain-des-Prés became the main place for the Parisian cultural, artistic and intellectual life. Many literary cafes such as Le Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots have opened and are still there nowadays.
It became first a haunt to the writers then the painters, actors and composers. They developed the night life then the luxurious fashion brands started to become interested in this area and to open shops. Nowadays, these brands are still there and all kind of fashion brands have settled in.
The must see are Place Saint-Germain and Place Saint-Sulpice and their churches, the Ecole des Beaux Arts, the Institut de France and the Hôtel des Monnaies.
The wanderers will be pleased with the boulevard Saint-Germain and the boulevard Raspail.
