République

A lively and laid-back area

The République area is lively and laid-back neighbourhood in the East of Paris.
Place de la République got its current configuration in the Second Empire. On its centre the statue of Marianne represents the French République.
This square is a strategic location where Parisians meet and most of the protests start. It is also a major crossing point of public transportation.
The square offers a few clothing shops but it is best to go close by to the Marais area for a wider choice of shops and styles.
The square is located at the border of several districts: the 2nd, 3rd, 10th and 11th.

The axis République / Oberkampf is the place to go out in the many bars and clubs.
Canal Saint-Martin is close to Place de la République. Parisians enjoy it especially in summer for a stroll or meet friends and have a drink in one of the terrasses or on the banks of the canal.
Place de la République is linked by the boulevards du Temple and Beaumarchais to another important square, Place de la Bastille, in the 11th district.
