Marais

A combination of history, cultural diversity and shopping

Le Marais is located in the 3rd and 4th districts of Paris on the right bank of the river.
As its name implies Le Marais was initially a marshy area. Many religious institutions were built in the 13th century then in the 17th century it became the nobility’s favourite place.
Many mansions were built there and some of them even remain. In the middle of the 18th century the nobility left and the middle class has been living there since then.
Nowadays several communities live together in this district, the Jew, the Gay and the Chinese communities which offers a very interesting cultural diversity.
Le Marais is one of the best spots for culture. It has many museums such as Musée Carnavalet, les Archives Nationales, le Musée Picasso, le Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme…
But it’s also one of the best areas for clothes shopping and interior design. The major international chains as well as talented French designers and luxury brands can be found there.
